  1. VANG is a line on a sailboat used to exert downward force on the boom, which helps control the shape of the sail. Isn’t “VANG” less technical and far more commonly used than “GAVAGE by the average person?”

    Your implicit premise that common sailing terms are technical is simply wrong. Millions of people from all walks of life sail and use these terms as a practical matter. The fact that millions of people have never been on a horse doesn’t make the terms for common riding gear technical. You accept those terms.
