  1. LUFFING is a common nautical term known to millions, but not Sam Ezersky. Between 3.5 to 4.5 million Americans go sailing in a given year. LUFFING is the backwind flapping of a sail that happens when a boat is steered (pointed) too high into the wind. LUFF is also used in the same context.
